At the World Tango Championships in Buenos Aires, there are two disciplines: the “tango de la pista” (that is, the tango danced in Milongas) and the “tango escenario", or stage tango, which is performed in shows. Many tango purists detest stage tango and devote themselves exclusively to “tango de la pista,” but in Buenos Aires, it’s worth taking a detour into the world of tango shows. After all, nowhere else can you find as many top-class tango shows as here.

Whenever I have non-dancers visit me in Buenos Aires, I suggest we go see a tango show: Unlike at a movies or theater, you don’t need to know the language, and you get a glimpse of a piece of this city’s authentic culture. And then, of course, the next question is: Where should we go?
